It’s an excellent 13-page rematch between none other than Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul. The first glimpse of what Kenobi does after that though appears in a non-canon story called “ Old Wounds” by Aaron McBride in the comic Star Wars: Visionaries. Obviously the first thing on Kenobi’s to-do list is to get baby Luke to the Lars homestead. Not only does Kenobi get into some action, but his adventures address a few dangling plot threads and, in one case, offer an alternative to the conclusion to his greatest rivalry. While we might not know quite what Deborah Chow has in mind for the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, the original Expanded Universe timeline has some fairly interesting events. It is not yet known if Luke will appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi, but if he does, we might just find Owen putting Obi-Wan in his place once again.Love or hate the Star Wars prequels, there’s a big question left hanging in the air that it seems everyone wants to explore: What did the famous Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi do for 20 years after Revenge of the Sith while he waited for Luke to come of age to be trained as a Jedi? Presumably the original answer was just that he lived a humble life on Tatooine, but it seems no matter the timeline, something big happens in-between Kenobi’s days as a renowned Jedi General in the Grand Army of the Republic and his final years as a hermit. There are too many possibilities for what can happen, but what can be gleaned from this comic is that Owen deeply dislikes Obi-Wan and wants him as far away from Luke as possible. It is difficult to speculate just how much of this argument will be taken into account with the show, but Owen’s character has always been naturally wary of Obi-Wan, even in A New Hope.

The fact that Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place a year after this argument could allow for a great deal of conflict between Owen and Obi-Wan, who have clearly rehashed this same fight at least once before. The interaction actually provides context to Obi-Wan’s willingness to simply tell Luke all about the Jedi and the Force the first chance he gets in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, as well as a the reason that Obi-Wan did not tell Luke sooner. What this entire argument demonstrates is that Owen played a large part in Luke’s ignorance about his family.

He then hammers his point home by accusing Obi-Wan of getting Anakin killed, and demanding: “Haven’t you murdered enough Skywalkers already, Kenobi?” Considering Obi-Wan’s last interaction with Anakin was quite literally chopping off a majority of his limbs and leaving him to burn to death, this line is incredibly poignant, and the way Obi-Wan is drawn with his head hanging guiltily twists the knife even deeper. This could be a recurring argument, considering Owen snaps at Obi-Wan that he’d “told him before” that he was not going to allow Obi-Wan to involve Luke in Jedi business, and he punctuates this by telling Obi-Wan that he would protect Luke, even if it meant protecting him from Obi-Wan. After all, up until this point in the issue, Obi-Wan's been toeing the line of influence in Luke's life, and he clearly wants to be a part of his life. At the end of their confrontation, Owen demands that Obi-Wan leave his family alone. It is clear from the one-sided nature of the argument that Obi-Wan’s distance from Luke is at least in part due to Owen’s disapproval. Owen dumps the contents of the box the Jawas gave Luke onto Obi-Wan’s floor and berating him for his constant presence.
